Psychological profile:
Highly opinionated, but still willing to take orders, Garrett is the
kind of person to shut up and do as he is told, but let out an emphatic 'I told you so' if
things go wrong. He is intelligent, but doesn't like to flaunt said intelligence, as
most people find flunkies who act like they know more than their superiors very
irritating. He doesn't lose his temper often, but when he does he becomes extremely
volatile and people frequently end up dead as a result.
Background:
Garrett grew
up in one of the more dangerous parts of Rochester, New York, and quickly learned how to
take care of himself. As he grew older, he discovered that he had an aptitude for
fighting. He began to hone his skills, and by the time he reached his late teens he
was very good with his fists, as well as a knife -- and, when need called for it, a
gun.
Once he reached college-age, he moved to California, taking up residence in downtown San
Diego. He effectively estranged himself from his family, preferring to keep to
himself in that regard. He joined the Marines, and also attended one of the local
universities. He got fairly decent marks, but preferred the exhilaration of physical
activities such as mountain climbing, fist fighting and his military training to the
tedium of study. Thus, he did not do as well in college as he might have, had he
truly applied himself.
While at college, Garrett met a woman by the name of Sylvia Parker. They became fast
friends, then more than friends, and by the time the two of them became college graduates
they were also newlyweds. However, little more than a month after the graduation,
Garrett lost his temper and got into a fight with one of his long-time rivals in the
Marines. The other man ended up dead, and Garrett was dishonorably discharged.
Three months later, with Garrett still unable to find a job, Sylvia hired out to do
temporary work at the university she had graduated from not even half a year before.
One evening when she was returning from a late night at the office, she was attacked by a
local gang and killed.
Garrett was devastated by the loss of his wife, and began to learn everything he could
about the gang who had attacked her. Once he had confirmed the identities of the
gang members he began to kill them methodically, one by one.
After he had slaughtered every one of the people responsible for his wife's murder, he
came dangerously close to suicide. But he found himself unable to eat lead, as he
had originally planned. And gradually he began to realize that, while he did not
usually enjoy taking life, he was extremely good at it. He had proven that during
the incident that had gotten him discharged from the Marines, and he had proven it again
now. And if he couldn't get a legal job... why not try for an illegal one? He
didn't really care what he did with his life, without Sylvia there to make it worthwhile.
Garrett began to hire himself out as a mercenary. He worked for
many influential employers over the years, and developed a reputation for completing all
jobs that he was assigned to the best of his abilities, doing as he was told when given
orders, and being ruthless when necessary but at the same time able to show mercy when it
was called for. He was a living legend.
However, his career was brought to an abrupt halt when he was caught in the middle of a
job and sent to prison for ten years. While in prison he kept mostly to himself,
spending most of his time reading, keeping in shape, and forcefully correcting the
impressions of fellow inmates who seemed to be getting a little too... infatuated with
him.
In his last year of imprisonment, Huisclos
De Thiel was placed in his cell-block. The two of them struck up a tentative
friendship, and eventually began to discuss their respective lines of work. Huisclos
mentioned
Arnaud on more than one occasion, although he
specifically warned Garrett not to have anything to do with his brother, something he had
learned the hard way.
After Garrett got out of prison he attempted to go back to his own line of work, but
quickly discovered that while he was still a living legend, his reputation had been
severely tainted by his arrest and the consequent ten years of inactivity. As such,
he found it extremely difficult to acquire any job higher than standard grunt-work.
Finally, out of money and out of options, Garret decided to do the one thing Huisclos had
specifically instructed him never to do: attempt to make a deal with Arnaud.
